Audiovisual/Multimedia

It’s all about the Network, Transport, Storage, Retrieval, Infrastructure, Audio, Video, Control, User Interface, Space Planning – Audiovisual/Multimedia is all about a lot of different things. Regardless of the application; Corporate Communication, Distance Learning, Education, Medical, Command and Control, C4I, the baseline questions are how is information disseminated across a building, campus or city, and then how is it accessed, stored and then ultimately retrieved for later use. In today’s world that information is more often than not a hybrid of audio, video and data all rolled in to one ‘packet’ of information.

Networked Multimedia

In many respects today’s audiovisual system has evolved to becoming a node on a well formatted and robust data network allowing for room build-out to occur as requirements evolve and funding permits.

Audiovisual/Multimedia is not just about a data network though in many applications of audiovisual/multimedia the data network has become the transport mechanism of choice and has replaced the ‘traditional’ point to point switching and distribution systems prevalent up until just a few years ago. With fairly recent significant improvements in the ability to encode and decode analog format signals while maintaining their integrity over distance, the data network has become the transport system of choice for most applications. Regardless of what that transport system may ultimately be, once the information gets to its final destination, the laws of physics still apply and the basic principles that brought audiovisual forward 40 years ago are still required. The Ergonomics of Visual Acuity, Aural Intelligibility, Human Factors of seating, reach and head rotation are some of the physical key components of a properly designed facility, all of which fall within SM&W’s audiovisual/multimedia expertise.

Digital Retrieval

As more and more information is required to be digitally mined and ultimately stored, digital retrieval systems make it possible to access the vast quantity of images, audio files, and full-motion video and traditional text documents from a catalogued database. There are several layers of design involved in implementing these systems. Not only does digital retrieval require an advanced multimedia network, it also requires a high-bandwidth, high-speed data network to process catalogue requests and route multi-megabyte information files, as well as an intuitive user interface to guide the users through the process.

Distance Learning

Through distance learning, a single instructor can provide instruction to a very large group of students beyond the confines of a classroom. Almost every classroom has the potential to become a distance learning center if the necessary infrastructure is provided.

There are several modes of providing distance learning, from full-blown dedicated television classrooms to a standard classroom outfitted with videoconferencing equipment. Often the instructor can operate the television technology directly, without assistance, while more complex facilities use a support technician. Either way, we recognize that teachers must be free to focus on teaching, not fumbling with technology. A properly formatted distance learning facility in conjunction with a robust digital storage & retrieval system can easily provide educational opportunities on a global, 24/7 ad-hoc basis on demand.

Network, Command & Emergency Operations Centers

With no question the requirements for Network, Command and Control as well as Emergency Operations are separate and distinct entities, each with its own unique requirements. Regardless of the ultimate application to a greater or lesser extent C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence) is fast becoming a baseline business requirement to maintain a competitive advantage. One important capability that C4I systems provide is situational awareness--information about the location and status of various assets and resources that often can be quite remote from the monitoring location.

Organizations now look beyond the basic conference room equipped with a wall chart and overhead projector, to a specialized environment. These specialty spaces are providing an invaluable decision making tool: the ability to view real-time high-resolution information from an extraordinarily wide range of sources, and to manipulate and display these images at an appropriate resolution and size as required by the source as well as the viewers. One of the prime benefits is that a group can comfortably focus on information normally contained on a desktop PC monitor with a high level of comfort and knowledge that all that need to be involved see the same information at the same time.

User Interface

Having all the information in the world stored and/or readily available is useless without the proper tools available to access that information. Throughout the project process it is incumbent upon the design team to develop a clear understanding of the users of these systems. As the understanding of the actual user requirements comes in to focus and the systems to be accessed are better understood, the appropriate content management and user interface systems can be developed. A touchscreen, a combination of a keyboard, mouse and large desktop display, a large format wall mounted control surface, Gesture Technologies, whatever it may become will all be driven by that clear understanding, with ultimate user control exercised via a well-developed graphic interface that will take the users intuitively through the complexity of control, from a single local source such as a DVD player to thousands of video & data feeds in a complex C4I environment.
