SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke provided telecommunications infrastructure/cable plant design services, security, audiovisual and acoustic consulting services for the first net zero energy school in New York City –  The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground, also known as P.S. 62.  Located on a 3.5-acre site on Staten Island, P.S.62 Richmond serves 444 pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students. This 68,068 square foot project was completed in 2015.

The building orientation and massing are optimized by the architect to take advantage of sunlight for both daylighting and photovoltaic arrays on the roof and south façade. Other sustainable and low-energy features incorporated in the design include an ultra-tight high-performance building envelop, daylit offset corridors, energy-efficient lighting fixtures, low-energy kitchen equipment, a greenhouse and vegetable garden, a geo-exchange system, energy recovery ventilators and demand-control ventilation, and a solar thermal system for hot water.

The SM&W team was responsible to specify the appropriate technology, security, acoustics and audiovisual components for the following areas:

• Classrooms, Science Lab, Art Room, Music Room
• Special Ed classroom
• Clerestory Window
• Natural Ventilation Notification
• Classroom/Lighting Mockup
• Wireless Technology Integration
• Station for recharging Tablets
• Tackable Whiteboard Surface
• Smart Outlets

Winner: 2016 AIA COTE Honor Award
