SM&W Contribution

The former David Nassif Building was home to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for 40 years. When DOT relocated to the Washington Navy Yard, David Nassif Associates began working with Kramer Consulting to renovate the building into the Constitution Center. Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical base-building services with SmithGroupJJR as well as acoustical and audiovisual design services for DBI Architects’ interiors design of the 350-seat auditorium and 8,500-square-foot conference center.

The building is one of the first in D.C. to use a chilled beam HVAC system, and it is the first large-scale use of the technology in the U.S. Our acousticians worked with both design teams to implement the system, to isolate the conference center and to control reverberation in the auditorium.

SM&W audiovisual specialists worked with the conference center and auditorium. Our design for the 6,000-square-foot auditorium included a front-projection display that accommodates presentations, lectures and videoconferencing and supports recording capabilities. The conference center provided a large, divisible, flat-floor space for presentation and uses front-projection display.
