SM&W Contribution

Vital to the future of both Stony Brook University and healthcare in the Long Island region, the eight-story Medical and Research Translation (MART) and Bed Tower building operates as the university’s new headquarters for cancer research, advanced medical imaging and cancer care. It brings cancer clinical services and research laboratories together, positioning Stony Brook to obtain the prestigious designation of a National Cancer Institute from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Shen Milsom Wilke’s multi-disciplinary approach enables primary building technologies to act in a coordinated fashion. The facility includes an advanced education center with a modern, 300-seat auditorium that is designed for both live and distance education applications. In addition, the design has one magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and two positron emission tomography (PET) suites. Public spaces are equipped with distributed electronic signage for informational and way-finding purposes.

The MART facility has 25 cancer biology-oriented laboratories, a 30-room cancer clinic, a 30-station clinical infusion center, a 300-seat auditorium, rooms for smaller conferences and new classrooms.
