SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided the full audiovisual, IT, and security design for the major redevelopment of 2 Penn Plaza, a landmark office tower located directly above Penn Station, one of the busiest transit hubs in the country.

Originally built in the late 1960s, the building underwent a comprehensive repositioning to transform it into a modern Class-A office asset. The scope included a full exterior re-skin, relocation of the main lobby to 33rd Street, extensive amenity upgrades, and major infrastructure modernization. Because the tower remained fully occupied throughout construction, the design had to accommodate 24/7 operations, phased implementation, and continuous uptime of all tenant IT systems, requiring close coordination with architectural, structural, and MEP teams.

SM&W’s scope encompassed digital signage and media walls in public spaces, AV systems for conference and amenity areas, and structured cabling and telecom room layouts to support high-density, multi-tenant connectivity. The security design included integrated access control, video surveillance, turnstiles at the main lobby, and video intercom systems at loading docks and controlled entrances, tailored to the building’s high-traffic, transit-adjacent environment.

The technology design supports the building’s transformation into a modern Class-A office environment while ensuring long-term flexibility and operational reliability.
