SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical, IT infrastructure and systems consulting expertise for the new College of Technology (City Tech) complex at the City University of New York (CUNY). The 365,000-square-foot complex has eight-stories including a 1,000-seat theatre, an 800-seat gymnasium and wellness center, and will host their clinical healthcare and sciences programs. The complex will serve at the epicenter of its STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program through its practice labs and smart classrooms for programs such as Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry.

The project lasted 11 years, beginning back in 2009, and officially opening in the fall of 2020. This long-time span presented challenges in managing the complex scope. SM&W had to provide high level technical project management in order to keep the project moving and on tract. This also meant that equipment was specified and installed much later than the actual design. The physical infrastructure had to be carefully coordinated and designed to ensure that future equipment would fit and be compatible. The success of the project hinged on the ability to plan for the future in regard to the design as well as utilizing new technologies.

This project achieved LEED Gold certification for its sustainable design.
