SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided acoustical consulting services for the renovation of the Folger Shakespeare Library located in Washington, D.C. This project was unique in that it involved both a historic theater and library reading rooms, each requiring distinct acoustical treatments. We conducted a thorough analysis of the HVAC system to develop a solution for controlling background noise levels. Additionally, we performed an on-site survey of the historic Paster Reading Room to assess the impact of a newly installed mechanical system on ambient noise levels.

A significant challenge that was encountered during the survey was that the new mechanical units were still undergoing balancing, meaning their final operating field conditions had not yet been solidified. To address this, the acoustics team, with assistance from a mechanical engineer, surveyed the space under various cooling capacity conditions. This allowed for the analysis of multiple unit conditions to assess noise levels. The survey concluded that the background noise levels within the library were acoustically acceptable. However, the team also identified additional noise mitigation options for enhanced noise control, particularly for researchers on the elevated floors. These options included determining how to reduce the cubic feet per minute (cfm) of supplied air to further manage background noise levels. This project demonstrates the ability to survey and analyze existing spaces equipped with new mechanical systems to ensure acoustic comfort is maintained.
