SM&W Contribution
Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided acoustical, audiovisual, IT infrastructure, and physical security consulting for the new Joint Safety Operations Center, which will accommodate both the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia State Police (VSP). The new facility creates a centralized location for VDOT’s Engineering and Administrative functions, a joint traffic operations center, and Virginia State Police’s Division 1 facility with an emergency dispatch center. The goals of the project were to provide a state-of-the-art operations center, a highly structured and modern law enforcement environment for VSP, and office/meeting spaces for VDOT that are flexible and distinctive.
SM&W’s security team met with representatives from both VDOT and VSP early in the project to ensure that the integration of their equally unique security requirements was incorporated into the building’s design. The security technologies used on the project provided safety for employees and visitors of both agencies and were designed to allow for future growth as new technologies develop.
The operations center was designed with an 8’x4’ video wall, visible from over 20 workstations spread across 4 tiered levels. The center was complete with a situation room overlooking the operations center, a three-way divisible multipurpose room with conferencing and press capabilities, outdoor press connectivity for remote broadcast trucks, and multiple training & conferencing areas with wired, wireless, and conferencing capabilities.
