SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical consulting expertise for the Mohegan Sun Arena & Convention Center located in Uncasville, CT. Mohegan Sun Sports Arena seats 10,000, features flexible seating configurations, and hosts both performance and sporting events. To meet the diverse sound needs for these functions, SM&W designed and specified a high-end, computer-controlled, distributed audio system including distributed speakers and a performance audio system includes state of the art line array speaker system with low frequency reinforcement, front of house and monitor mix positions and consoles, effects racks, amplifier racks and power distribution.

A Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based system provides the main processing required for the system.  The DSP provided all system-specific mixing, routing, equalization, delay, and other processing functions for the various modes of operation. Multiple modes of operation are defined in this software, each selectable by means of a control surface. Additional systems provided included video interface to the LED scoreboard and messaging systems and feeds to the in-house CATV system, for retransmission throughout the facility.

SM&W provided an extensive broadcast distribution network. This system consists of a series of broadcast panels, including Triaxial camera connectors, baseband video and audio connectivity, IFB connectivity, fiber (single mode and multimode) and multipin audio connectors. SM&W also provided a robust RF infrastructure, to allow the use of wireless broadcast cameras and equipment. This allows the operators freedom of movement on the floor.

To provide optimum acoustics for this indoor arena, SM&W’s acoustical staff conducted complete modeling studies to ensure that reverberation characteristics are realized to accommodate widely diverse multiple functions of the arena.
