New York University Center For Urban Science and Progress (CUSP)

SM&W Contribution

The renovation of 370 Jay Street, a New York City-owned, largely vacant, 560,000 square foot office building, was part of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s applied science initiatives to keep NYC competitive in the 21st Century.

CUSP is located on the upper floors of the building and includes a research “observatory.” The second floor has been reserved for more public functions such as lecture rooms and classrooms. The second floor location also facilitates logistics for the frequent meetings and conferences held by CUSP – and potential utilization by the larger community.

SM&W provided acoustics, audiovisual, and security consulting for the classrooms, conference rooms, auditoria, a seminar room, visualization labs, and the Urban Observatory lab. The auditorium has broadcast connections for press events; the seminar room has video production capabilities. SM& W designed the infrastructure to support the technology that was being developed by NYU CUSP during the project design phases. The technology infrastructure will support both day one needs and long term planning.
