U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, Exhibition Hall Redesign

Washington, D.C.

SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke provided IT infrastructure and physical security consulting expertise to the Exhibition Hall at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. The Hall hosts over 500,000 visitors on a yearly basis, providing visitors and guests with artifacts, videos and computer interactivities. The redesign will include a permanent exhibition gallery, a temporary exhibition gallery, and educational mixed-use space. The objective of the redesign is to boost the number of visitors to the Exhibition Hall, transform the space, refine the hall’s content, and make the space accessible to all visitors. The 16,500 SF hall is currently home to E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many, One, which is dedicated to telling the story of the U.S. Congress and Capitol.

SM&W worked closely with both the Architect of the Capitol and the design team to integrate both the infrastructure and security components seamlessly into the exhibits and ensure that the communication pathways between the devices and the monitoring center are properly designed. SM&W has developed all plans, details, and specifications in support of the implementation of these security features to produce a package that can be released for tender. The final details for technical installation, methodology, placement, and mounting to ensure that the infrastructure and systems are installed as required to meet the established criteria.
