SM&W Contribution
Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided acoustical, audiovisual, IT Infrastructure, IT Systems, and security consulting expertise for the LEED Platinum Volpe National Transportation Center in Cambridge, MA. The 13-level, 575K SF office building with 150K SF of below-grade parking, houses over 1,000 personnel and includes public access spaces, offices, open workstations, 26K SF of laboratory spaces for basic and applied research, and a new childcare center complete with playground, and fitness center. Laboratory spaces include IT labs and transportation simulation spaces, some of which require high-bay facilities with heavy floor loading and at-grade access.
SM&W’s audiovisual team provided expertise for the 38K SF of meeting rooms, reception areas, conference center, training rooms, secure conferencing spaces, library, and building lobbies. Our designs ensure that requirements are met for a fully developed and comprehensive audiovisual system, capable of performing to the required operational and communicative needs. Our information technology team determined the requirements for a system that supports data & telecommunications connectivity throughout the facility, including building core and shell, interior spaces, campus connectivity, IT routing and pathways, and a structured cabling system. Our security design includes an access control system, video surveillance, an alarm monitoring and notification system, personnel and vehicle screening systems, and a license plate capture system. Designed to put the Center’s work on display, a series of nine, 14-ft-tall street level garage doors regulate vehicular access to the building and provide a demonstration area for the 90K SF Human Factors Lab’s vehicle testing and simulation prep.
