Washington State Convention Center Expansion

SM&W Contribution

Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W) provided acoustics, audiovisual, IT, & physical security consulting expertise for the new expansion of the Washington State Convention Center. This 1.5M SF addition to the Washington State Convention Center is located at the crossroads between more than seven of Seattle’s most iconic neighborhoods and touching four of its most prominent streets, uniquely positioning the project to function as a connecting hub for multiple urban districts. The facility incorporates 1,250,000 SF of convention space and retail in an innovative program including stacked exhibit halls, two stacked meeting room levels, and a cutting-edge 60,000 SF ballroom.

The Interior architecture and finishes required highly coordinated and integrated acoustical and technology solutions. Acoustically, the open atmosphere and flexible nature of spaces, proved a challenge that required significant attention to finishes and noise mitigation techniques. IT infrastructure design consisted of the development of cabling infrastructure to support intra-building systems for the distribution of voice and data services, distributed antenna systems (DAS), AV and Security. SM&W also provided oversight of IT Systems or network implementation. Highly advanced AV over IP solutions were developed to allow maximum flexibility in routing of signals for various room and facility scenarios. Security design included upgrades and/or expansions of existing access control, intrusion detection, intercom and video surveillance systems. The size of the facility drove the need for cost-effective solutions which ranged from wired and wireless devices to multi-sensor cameras.
