SM&W Contribution

SM&W provided acoustical and theatrical design for the new senior high school for the Houston Independent School District. Jack Yates High School educates students in four career technical education areas (CTEs), including logistics/maritime, graphic design and production, arts (AV Production and Arch/Construction), and health sciences. Key spaces for this project include a learning commons, classrooms, information center storage, as well as a large, flexible performing arts center.

The high school’s performing arts center was designed to be flexible in nature in order to be reconfigured into both one large auditorium as well as multiple smaller multipurpose spaces. Because of this, the performing arts center included adjustable seating.

The new school was designed to benefit both students and the larger community. In addition, the educational “neighborhoods” within the building will support each of the school’s CTEs.

The project is striving to achieve LEED Silver certification.
