Sited on the southern peninsula of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, the new NYPD Bomb Squad Headquarters Building will replace the unit’s existing facilities that were heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
SM&W provided video surveillance coverage to the exterior of the building. This coverage is intended for live viewing only and captures all approaches to the building; it is viewable from a desktop workstation. The NYPD does not utilize access control readers, instead the building is manned 24/7/365. Entrance is gained by video intercoms with remote door unlocking from the master intercom location.
Our IT design included cabling infrastructure for the building which included new incoming service location that feeds these services to the 2nd floor IT closet. The space itself included ceiling mounted data ports for WiFi adapters along with in furniture cablings for the furniture system for desk located workstations.
One of the challenges was incorporating our exterior cameras into the façade. We worked closely with Rice + Lipka on camera detailing so the cameras are blended into the exterior cladding with minimal protrusion. This provides both a covert installation with minimal impact to camera view and functionality.
The project is being developed as part of NYCDDC’s Design Excellence program with construction slated to start in 2018. The City of New York’s Public Design Commission recognized the project with its 2017 Award for Excellence in Design.
