SM&W Contribution

The new Order of St. Francis (OSF) HealthCare Cancer Institute will become the central hub and greatest resource for the fourteen other hospitals and five cancer centers in the OSF HealthCare network. The new facility promotes a collaborative care concept with a focus on wellness and prevention to provide holistic interdisciplinary cancer treatment to the Peoria area community.

The five-story, 190,000 SF Cancer Institute consists of two functional components separated by a garden. The North component consists of a multi-specialty clinic with telehealth-capable exam/consult suites, an infusion center, outpatient entry with conference spaces, and typical administrative and public spaces. The South component includes a Proton Therapy vault with ancillary exam and treatment functions, including an interoperative HDR Brachytherapy Vault with access to dual-energy CT-on-rails and MRI. The Varian ProBeam 360 Therapy System makes the OSF Cancer Institute among fewer than 40 facilities in the country offering this more effective and noninvasive therapy. In support of OSF’s guiding principle of holistic care, the facility also offers an open teaching kitchen, community rooms for education, survivorship programs, and exercise, and a resource center for access to digital information.

In addition to planning for the Proton Therapy system, SM&W’s medical equipment planning team incorporated state-of-the-art medical equipment technology into the design of all clinical and treatment spaces. This includes planning and coordination for Gamma Knife, cryoablation, microwave ablation, NanoKnife therapy, and one of the few FLASH radiation therapy systems in the country. We also worked closely with the design team and vendors to manage equipment budgeting. SM&W’s acoustics design provides acoustic separation and speech privacy throughout the facility to ensure that patient conversations remain private and to support the comfort of staff and patients to aid in recovery. We also provided vibration consulting, which ensures that medical and mechanical equipment does not interfere with sensitive imaging and testing equipment.
