Shen Milsom & Wilke provided acoustical consulting expertise for the Encore Boston Harbor (previously known as the Wynn) in Everett, Massachusetts. This project included a 506-room, 356-foot-tall luxury hotel comprised of 595,419 SF and a 213,094 SF gaming facility. The gaming facility includes 3,200 slot machines and 160 gaming tables. Other features of the project were 65,132 square feet of retail space, 57,678 square feet of food and beverage (including 11 restaurants and bars and a nightclub), 32,942 square feet of convention and meeting space, a 15,571 square foot spa and gym, and a 5,006 square foot four-season atrium garden located at the main lobby entrance. Also included in the project was 385,231 square feet of back-of-house space and 78,372 square feet of front-of-house service including front-of-the-house support, restroom space, and lobby lounge. Additionally, there was a 1.65-million SF parking structure below the casino level.
The SM&W acoustical consulting team was brought into the project because of our extensive experience in gaming projects. This project’s architectural acoustics services included environmental noise monitoring, noise and vibration control for a large central equipment plant as well as interior acoustical design for a wide range of amenity spaces, entertainment and guest spaces. The site borders a commuter rail line for which a long-term noise survey was conducted. The survey results were used to establish an upgrade façade glazing to attenuate the train noise. Major mechanical equipment, including large emergency generators and cooling towers were specified with sound attenuation and located as far from hotel guests as possible. The conference center was provided with operable walls specified for acoustic performance and ample acoustic finishes were included in the design to achieve comfortable acoustic environment.
