Cape Cod Hospital

SM&W Contribution

SM&W is currently providing acoustical, audiovisual, IT infrastructure, medical equipment planning, and physical security consulting services for Cape Cod Hospital. The project consists of a new 6-story tower and the upgrade of the hospital’s cancer and cardiology programs. The number of beds in the hospital will increase from 259 to 299, including four new critical-care beds and 36 medical-surgical beds.

Our medical equipment planning services cover the Radiation Oncology Space (2 Linear Accelerators, 1 HDR/KV Room, a CT Simulator, and Exam Rooms), 28 ICU/CVICU Room, 36 Medical Surgery Room, 36 Infusion Bays, and a Pharmacy. Our acoustics team provided most of their design services for the core and shell portion of the project. Because of the hospital’s proximity to Barnstable Municipal Airport and the Hyannis Transportation Center, our acousticians had to pay special attention to exterior noises, recommending several mitigation strategies.

Our Integrated Communications Technology (ICT) scope encompasses the design and expansion of the existing hospital systems, including the infrastructure and outside plant. The new tower is being designed to support WiFi in all spaces and ample cabling pathways for technology changes in the future. The hospital’s audiovisual design will include a large multipurpose space that can be used for teaching, lectures, community events, and fundraising activities. Security design for the tower was important to ensure the overall safety of both staff and patents. New systems will include access control with IP enabled card readers, high quality video surveillance, and wireless nurse call and duress alarm systems.

The hospital was designed to the 2018 FGI guidelines.
